Competition Team

A word from Sensei Mike

It is my intention to train a world class level athlete to compete for and win a place on the National team to represent the USA at a World tournament in 3 to 4 years. It will be a much harder pace then the normal classes, but the benefits are huge for those who truly have the drive and desire.

The following is expected of all Competition team members:
  • Show strong spirit whenever at the dojo or when competing. Seriousness, Try Hard, Never give up.
  • Take a leadership role in the dojo. Assist the class instructors. Model good behavior.
  • Be supportive of other team members and all dojo students.
  • Commit to train at least two days per week. Try to train three times per week.
  • Participate in all of your regularly scheduled classes.
  • Participate in Competition classes held every Tuesday, and every other Saturday.
The following are the benefits of being on the competition team.
  • Accelerated and advanced training. It normally takes 4-5 years of training before being invited to test for your black belt. Highly motivated and spirited competition team members will receive extra training sessions, at a higher level of intensity. Those who exhibit the ability to perform strongly will be given the opportunity to test for their next belt level on a faster then normal schedule.
  • Regularly scheduled classes will be added to the schedule just for the competition team. Special classes and seminars will be planned and scheduled.
  • The Dojo will provide a competition Gi, belt, gloves, headgear, and mouthpiece for each member.
  • The Dojo will provide any association memberships needed for competition. (i.e. AAU, NKF, ISKF)
  • The Dojo will cover any registration fees for any approved tournament, up until the deadline for early registration. Any karate-ka who makes his/her decision to compete AFTER the Early Registration deadline will be responsible for any extra charges. The dojo will pay up to the Early Registraion amount.
  • The Dojo will assist with transportation to and from the tournaments. We have a 15-person van to use for travel to and from competition sites. Competitors are encouraged to car-pool as resources and schedules permit.
Each competitor is responsible for the following:
  • Gear Bag
  • Running Shoes
  • Running Shorts and Shirt
  • Protective cup
  • Towel
  • Ace Bandage
  • Medications(asthma, allergy, etc.)
  • Sport tape kit
  • Water Bottle

For the first tournament of the season it was a lot of fun. There was a good turn out and the competition was strong. Thanks to Sensei Mark for helping me with Kushanku, making it a gold medal kata. Everyone did well in the kumite, especially Eric and Sensei Robert. Now I can't wait for the next tournament! Daniel Beaudoin
